When I saw the girl running out of the hospital right after giving birth, I knew something was going on. Then the doctor came to me and said, “There is something I want to talk to you about.”
Women who have already had a baby know the agony and pain of the last few weeks of pregnancy. At this point we can’t wait to meet our children and put an end to the pain and anxiety.
My third pregnancy was no different. Indeed, the birth took longer than expected: the baby “decided” to stay at home for another week.
I am a mother of three children and two of them are twins. I’ve always dreamed of having twins, but the chances were slim. It is said that one must have twins in the mother’s or father’s family to increase the chances.
But somehow, life gave us Steve and Sam, so you never know. And because life surprised us in this way, my husband Mike and I joked about having twins. “Still?” I asked Mike.
“Why not? Maybe, maybe not, who knows … Look what happened with Steve and Sam.” Mike is not religious, but rather spiritual. Me too.

“It would be great if the universe gave us a boy and a girl this time … There’s nothing wrong with wanting that, right?”
Physical signs indicated a regular single pregnancy. The ultrasound showed only one baby, but my intuition told me to “wait for the surprise”.
When my waters finally broke in the middle of the night, my husband rushed me to the hospital as fast as he could. When we arrived, I saw a young woman who was about to give birth. We were in the same ward and her contractions started earlier than mine.

Before the nurses took her to the operating room, I noticed that something was wrong with her. I don’t know if she was nervous or if it was pain, but I felt something more.
When my turn came, the delivery went smoothly and everything went well. We had another nice and loving boyfriend. We called him Seth. My husband and I were so happy!

I rested after giving birth and when I got up to go for a walk outside, I saw the same girl as before I ran out of the hospital. I didn’t understand why but it was none of my business.
When I got back to my room, the doctor came to see me. “Hi Sarah, congratulations on your baby! I’m glad everything went well.”
“Thanks !” I had known Dr. Conrad for many years. He was with me during my other pregnancies. He sat on the edge of my bed and said, “There’s something else I’d like to talk to you about.”

I immediately sat down on the bed. “Is everything okay with my baby ?!”
“Don’t worry Sarah. Your baby is fine and fine. I came here to talk about someone else’s baby.”
“Okay …” I raised an eyebrow. “Just do it…”
“We had an accident this morning. An 18 year old girl signed a parental rejection and left the hospital immediately. She had serious problems with childbirth, but she didn’t want to stay here anymore.

“Is that the girl who just left the hospital?”
“Yes, that’s right. The baby is fine, so … I’ve been thinking about you two.” She continued to look at the two of us: “I know you and Mike quite well and you’ve always talked to me about your desire to have a baby girl.”
“I know it’s a lot to ask right now, but would you like to adopt it? There is a whole process behind the adoption, as you may know, but the hospital will sign all the paperwork and it may take a while before you can get it. I’ll write a letter of recommendation … But I know you’re a great mom and I knew I had to at least try to suggest it.

I was shocked. I didn’t know what to say, but my heart already had an answer. I looked at my husband and he said, “Can we see the baby?”
“Sure,” Dr. Conrad replied. We went to the maternity ward and there she was. When I saw it, I immediately fell in love with it. I knew the answer. I turned to my husband and he just nodded. He felt the same. I turned to Dr. Conrad, eyes wide, and asked, “Where do we sign?”

A few months passed and Stephanie – I had already mentioned her because I knew she was coming to our house – was still in foster care. I dreamed of having her with us every day and I could never forget that beautiful face of her.
Every day I prayed and asked the universe to bring Stephanie to us. I knew I was destined to be her mother, even though it took years. I didn’t care, I would have waited as long as necessary.
It’s been 10 months and I got a call. “Mrs. Roberts?”
“I’m Ms. Rodriguez of the Chicago Adoption Center. We have received your application and Dr. Conrad’s letter of recommendation.”

My heart was beating. “I’d like to arrange a meeting with you and your husband. But for your information, other families are interested in your chosen child.”
In any case, I knew Stephanie was my daughter. After a few meetings, placement procedures and hearings, we finally heard the news: Stephanie was joining our family!

The day Stephanie got home was one of the best days of my life! I am so thankful for that. I love this little girl as if she were my biological daughter. In fact, we also consider Stephanie and Seth our twins.
What can we learn from this story?
- Family isn’t always blood. Sarah had a feeling that she would have to apply for adoption and fight for the baby.
- We should always listen to our intuition. Sarah listened to her intuition and followed it.
