US Army Metaverse: Work In Progress?

By changing its name to Meta, Facebook started the race for the metaverse. Financial institutions and tech companies spare no effort to conquer virtual reality. Not wanting to miss the train, the Pentagon is working on the US military metaverse.

Earlier this month we talked about Spaceverse, a variant of the metaverse that the US Air Force would be developing to train and train its units. Lately, Wired reported that the US military has already developed its own version of the metaverse. Which means the US military has remained at the forefront of the metaverse when we consider its new designs using artificial intelligence (AI) assistants. Through these, soldiers will benefit from guidance through sounds, words and graphics. And it will depend on their position or their actions.

On the part of the US Air Force, fighter pilots improve by measuring themselves against the best elements of AI. Typically, the latter have already used the trial and error process to master the ability to overtake and outsmart any human driver.

If not, the US Air Force already hosted a high-level meeting in a virtual environment last December. 250 people attended this meeting.

The metaverse has been on the rise since Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta will now be renamed Facebook. In this virtual reality, he wants to create a world where people interact as in real reality. Many have been conquered, both individuals and companies.

Furthermore, the number of companies attracted to the metaverse continues to increase. We are currently seeing a rush of economic players towards this new virtual Eldorado. Some of them don’t hesitate to shell out millions of dollars to afford a virtual plot of land in Decentraland or The Sandbox.

But is the metaverse really that new? For nothing. Right on the side of the constituent elements of this virtual universe, we see that many of them have already existed for a long time. These include virtual and augmented reality environments, three-dimensional simulations and helmet screens.

For the past decade, virtual reality has always been at the heart of the training of US Army pilots and sailors. This has resulted in savings in terms of military equipment, which is often too expensive. Hence the use of simulated environments for staff training. In addition, the technology has allowed users to test equipment to their absolute limits and work endlessly on improving human capabilities.

The US military has always relied on virtual reality to prepare its units for the merciless world of the battlefield. Therefore, US military hospitals, including the one in Tampa, do not hesitate to use it to help veterans escape the horrors of war and fight post-traumatic stress.

Still remaining in the defense sector, there is also Boeing which uses augmented reality (AR) to train its mechanics for the hours before they hit a navy plane. More precisely, they will not carry out general maintenance on a device belonging to the army without having gone through this phase.

In addition, it should be remembered that the US military has signed a contract worth nearly $ 22 million with Microsoft for the delivery of more than 120,000 helmets powered by Hololens technology. This happened long before the arrival of Zuckerberg’s Meta.

With an adequate budget and all the aces in hand, it makes perfect sense that the US military doesn’t need to outsource its metaverse to a Meta or a Microsoft. Because its old practices show that this new technology isn’t that new.
