Fake Roblox events are a big deal, says YouTuber

Fake Roblox events can be a big deal on the sandbox gaming platform, according to Roblox YouTuber SharkBlox. Initially these events seem legitimate, but their developers have created clever workarounds to trick users into spending Robux on avatar items in the experience, even if the items don’t actually exist.

In a video released on August 24 titled “Fake roblox events are becoming a big problem …”, the content creator investigated a Complaint from Twitter users who bought a fake item during an event on the platform.

The now deleted event experience in question was disguised as the Chainsmokers Roblox Experience. This type of event is in the realm of possibility as Roblox recently hosted concerts for various musicians, including George Ezra, Twenty One Pilots and rapper Denzel Curry at an event called Guacathon.

The YouTuber joined the experience of a fake event to show how players could be tricked into buying items they deem authentic. In the video, SharkBlox notes that at the time of registration the game had over 1,100 active players, illustrating the potential depth of the problem.

SharkBlox then buys an item that appears to be a real prop, but is actually a game pass, meaning the player does not receive the purchased item. Upon further investigation, the YouTuber realizes that the transaction documentation is tied to an experience called Untitled Game which hosts all the game passes in the fake event experience.

SharkBlox claims to have reported the fake event multiple times and asked Roblox to remove it, but they were still able to access it to make the video. The YouTuber also noted that the lack of clarity about purchases in the experience could be an issue, as the scammers behind the event could easily make it look like the player was buying a legitimate item. Roblox could benefit from differentiating game pass purchases from item purchases to help people notice when they’re not buying real avatar items, they suggest.

SharkBlox notes that this style of event cheating is relatively new, but shares the fact that they have seen other similarly structured events in the past. There is currently no obvious way to tell the difference between an authentic Roblox sanctioned event experience and a fake experience designed to trick people into spending Robux. While there are signs that these games may not be what they appear to be, a player should know what to look for when evaluating whether an event is real.

Roblox has some moderation practices to prevent users from creating experiences designed solely to scam players, but even so, content that initially appears legitimate can still escape filters.

While the metaverse should be a place for everyone, it’s worth considering whether there should be a verification system and accompanying badge for Roblox experiences from legitimate companies and brands, even if that could affect the visibility of unverified events. As the metaverse continues to grow, developers will likely continue to do more imitations and other fake events to trick people into buying fake items.
