5 places to discover during Paris Design Week!

This year the metaverse is in the spotlight. A little reminder to boomers, the metaverse is a virtual world used specifically to describe a future version of the internet perceived in augmented reality. More generally, the idea is to reconcile physical and digital work.

Under the sign of youth

An event awaited by all design enthusiasts, Design Week transforms Paris into a showcase for international creation. Paris Design Week, with the D’days, is a crucial moment for Parisian design: imagine dozens of galleries, design schools, workshops and creative studios set in motion to present the best of contemporary creation. The capital will be the déco “hotspot” of the month of September, offering professionals and the general public the opportunity to discover the collections of well-known designers and the work of the new generations.

Young talents are in the spotlight thanks to the Paris Design Week Factory initiative, which offers newcomers a unique space to showcase their creativity. Marais, Espace Commines, Galerie Joseph 5 rue Saint-Merri … it’s a whole series of new addresses that will be hit by the effervescence of young designers. And since after the effort, there is always comfort, Paris Design Week proposes to delight us in new places of Parisian bistronomy and enjoy cocktail evenings by district to celebrate the start of the school year in design mode.

The metaverse at the service of design

Led by Maison & Objet, the theme of each edition is always highly anticipated. Last year, “Desirable Development” was in the spotlight. This year a topical theme will thrill the sphere of decoration: “Méta Sensible” or the universe of the metaverse. The physical and digital worlds are no longer opposed. They influence, augment and even merge to become a new medium of creation, communication and distribution. It will then be a question of confronting the sensitive and the intangible, of rediscovering the emotion that emerges from a craft, letting oneself be moved by a digital work. Instead of choosing, couldn’t we combine the two sensible and virtual universes? Paris Design Week will offer interpretations through several new exhibitions and installations.

Our selection of the 5 places or exhibitions to see:

· “Design for a free world”: the inclusion of social and environmental issues and sustainability issues in the field of design is the whole purpose of this exhibition, the name of which refers to the book “Design for the Real World” by Austrian- American designer Victor Papanek, supporter of responsible design from an ecological and social point of view. Organized by the Métier d’Art et design campus, which brings together the 9 largest design schools in Paris and 10 high schools of excellence, this exhibition will present the projects of the best students for 5 days at the Académie du Climat. The opportunity to measure how young graduates compare and balance the bridges between the real world and the digital world in their reflections and interrogate production systems, the environment, consumption, through the prism of design.

· “Ikea district”: a highlight for decoration brands, Paris Design Week also offers the opportunity to discover new collections of names known to the general public. IKEA will be present in particular with its “IKEA district” at Garage Amelot. The Swedish giant therefore imagined a visionary district that would respond to the habitats and lifestyles of tomorrow. It will also present its new collections and exclusive collaborations. Finally, there will also be a retrospective of the anniversary: ”40 years with the French”.

· The Swedish Institute apartments on a guided tour with gourmet aperitif: Only once a year and only for 2 weeks, the Swedish Institute opens its apartments to visitors. Indeed, the cultural site in the heart of the Marais hides exceptional apartments inside to accommodate researchers and artists living in Sweden on a monthly basis. On the occasion of its new free exhibition called “Swedish Secrets” in parallel with Paris Design Week and the Traversées du Marais (the free festival that allows us to discover the cultural places of the Marais), the Swedish Institute therefore proposes a visit to these famous apartments in an unusual format this year since it is done in a gourmet aperitif mode.

Pop-up, talk and competition for designer apprentices in Pylones: On the occasion of France Design Week, PYLONES will set up an exclusive 100% recyclable pop-up, Place de la Bastille from 14 to 17 September 2022. An ephemeral space dedicated to enthusiasts of design, professionals and students, animated by a talk for the exchange with experts. This event will also be an opportunity to launch the first edition of the PYLONES POP DESIGN AWARDS!
